Some pets need a little extra support to receive grooming safely and comfortably. At Universal Pet Hospital in Palo Alto, our medical grooming services are designed for dogs and cats who experience significant anxiety, pain, or behavioral challenges during standard grooming procedures. Our Fear Free Certified team uses veterinary sedation when appropriate to ensure your pet's experience is calm, safe, and as low-stress as possible. Call (650) 362-7969 to speak with our team about whether medical grooming is right for your pet.
For pets who are extremely stressed or resistant to nail trims, a sedated nail trim allows us to complete the procedure safely without causing distress to your pet or risk of injury to our team or to you. We use the lightest sedation appropriate for your pet's size, age, and health status, confirmed through a brief pre-sedation physical assessment at the time of the appointment. Sedated nail trims are available for both dogs and cats. If your pet has experienced a previous nail trim injury, or if nail trimming has become a consistent source of significant anxiety, please ask whether a sedated nail trim is the right option.
Severely matted coats cause significant discomfort, restrict movement, and can lead to skin irritation, sores, and inflammation beneath the mat. Attempting to remove severe mats at home using scissors or clippers without veterinary experience is dangerous and risks cutting the skin. Our team uses a combination of careful dematting techniques and, when necessary, veterinary sedation to remove mats safely and as comfortably as possible for your pet. Dematting services are available for dogs and cats. We will evaluate the extent of matting at the appointment and discuss the most appropriate approach before proceeding.
